‘Legislation of the Future’ workshop held as part of Legislative Week
14/02/2019

The General Secretariat of the Supreme Legislation Committee in the Emirate of Dubai (SLC), organized a workshop titled the ‘Legislation of the Future’ on 14 February 2019, the final day of the Legislative Week, which served as an ideal platform to drive the legislative system’s development in line with Dubai’s inspiring and forward- looking vision. The workshop was organized in alignment with the SLC’s efforts to spread legal knowledge through exchanging ideas and supporting the aspirations of youth, believing in their active role in laying the foundations for the future.

The workshop brought together a large number of government officials, SLC General Secretariat staff, and young legal practitioners working in Dubai government entities to discuss the most important factors in building a promising legislative future while enhancing Dubai’s competitiveness as a city of the future. The discussions focused on providing the youth with opportunities to express their opinions, to explore the prospects of the legislative future of Dubai, and to strengthen and integrate the efforts of legal practitioners and specialists to ensure balanced, sustainable, transparent and fair government legislation that supports the objectives of the Dubai Plan 2021. These efforts will contribute to the achievement of the wise leadership’s vision to build a visionary government capable of anticipating the future.

H.E. Ahmad Saeed bin Meshar Al Muhairi, SLC Secretary General, stated that the ‘Legislation of the Future’ workshop marks a major stride in our efforts aimed at building and anticipating the future, by establishing the strong legal and legislative foundations needed to transform Dubai into one of the most future-oriented and best cities in the world. The initiative reflects our keenness to drive integration and coordination with Dubai government entities, in order to promote the spirit of leadership among legal practitioners. This requires an emphasis on the role of youth in updating legislation that supports government excellence in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to mobilize the potential of youth to drive and empower governments of the future."

H.E. Bin Meshar added: "The ‘Legislation of the Future’ workshop proved to be an important platform to discuss young legal practitioners’ involvement in building a legislative system that supports the development and implementation of future projects, marking a new milestone in the success story of the Legislative Week. The event has become a platform for enhancing legislative awareness among the community in line with our strategic objective to achieve sound legal understanding of applicable legislation and to ensure its proper implementation. We renew our commitment to develop pioneering legislation that meets current and future challenges and to launch initiatives that support the legislative and legal structure of Dubai. This reflects the prevalent ambitions to develop a government that supports high ethical and moral standards in a society where the ideals and values of tolerance, knowledge, and equal economic opportunity reign supreme."

Dr. Mansour Abdul Rahman Al Osaimi, Director of the SLC’s Legislation Directorate, said: "The “Legislation of the Future” workshop presented an ideal platform to support our joint efforts with government entities in line with our belief in the importance of integration of government efforts as the solid foundation for creating a unique legal environment that supports the Dubai Plan 2021. The workshop focuses on ensuring the consistency of Dubai legislation with the UAE Constitution, federal legislation, and applicable local legislation.”

“We look forward to organizing similar events that will strengthen the SLC’s role as a major contributor to achieving Dubai’s long-term vision by adopting clear and effective methodologies to develop an efficient legislative system. This will also ensure the optimal implementation of legislation that supports the emirate’s legal system in line with Dubai’s comprehensive and sustainable development plans,” he added.

The workshop, which was held at the Youth Centre at Emirates Towers, emphasised the importance of legislation in various aspects of life in society, raising awareness about federal and local legislation in the UAE, and highlighted the SLC’s processes and procedures as well as the services it provides. Discussions were held with the youth to explore their suggestions and to address their queries about legislative work in order to actively involve them in shaping the future of the legislative system in Dubai.
